The European Union can now issue travel bans and asset freezes on associates of Islamic State and Al Qaeda, after backing new rules on sanctions against the groups on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

The rules mean individuals who have helped plan or execute attacks can be hit with sanctions, as well as any financiers, supporters or foreign combatants who train or work with the extremist organizations.

The newly adopted regulations also allow “individuals or entities” to be listed for “serious abuses of human rights outside the EU, including abduction, rape, sexual violence, forced marriage and enslavement of persons.”

Before the adoption of the new rules, the EU could only bring sanctions against people identified by the United Nations. Additionally, EU member states could impose sanctions individually.

According to the AP, ISIL associates attempting to enter the bloc could be barred entry, while EU nationals with links to the group would be allowed to travel only to their home country.
