British wrestling legend, Doug Williams has retired from professional wrestling last night after losing his Atlas Championship. Williams faced British Strong Style member, Trent Seven at PROGRESS Wrestling’s Hello Wembley event last night, with the match having the stipulation that if Williams lost, he retired.

After what was reportedly an excellent match between the two men, Seven picked up the victory to become the new Atlas Champion and the entire PROGRESS roster came out on to the ramp after the match to give Williams a standing ovation.

Williams has announced on Twitter today that he is officially retired from British Wrestling, though he does still have some overseas commitments that he will be honoring, meaning we haven’t seen the last of him in the ring, just yet.

Doug added that he has been overwhelmed by the response from people after the news, some of which he claims has been totally unexpected with his final comments being to the fans, asking them to continue supporting British wrestling.

Overwhelmed by the amazing response I have received. Some totally unexpected! I will take this moment to formally announce my retirement. I am finished in the UK now but still have some international bookings to fulfil. Thank you once again and keep supporting British Wresting!

Other major names in the business such as Frankie Kazarian, who claimed that wrestling is a better place because of Doug, and Eric Bischoff, who stated that Doug is one of the classiest people he has ever worked with also showed their respect.

Eric is one of the most influential people ever in the evolution of Professional Wrestling over the last past 30 years. He didn’t need to tweet this, but he did. Thank you. I valued the time I spent working with you and the things that I learnt. https://t.co/L5krzHybhI
