CWCH: Trentino Diatec patched up. Tunisians squandered a fabulous chance!

Trentino Diatec completed a bunch of the top four teams at the Club World Championships played in Betim. Italians had to overcame Japanese Panasonic Panthers and did that in straight and easy sets. In the Pool B, Club Sportif Sfaxlen was extremely close to make a huge surprise to beat favoured Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, but the Tunisians spoiled two match balls and have to walk around themselves with a taste.

The spike by Theo Lopes went out of bounds to give Iran’s Kal Kalleh the 8-7 advantage in the first set. The Iranian team increased to 13-10 after the attack by Alireza Nadi and ace by Alireza Jadidi. Kal Kalleh was in front 16-12 at the second TTO. UPCN closed in at 17-16 with consecutive spikes by Alexandru Olteanu and tied at 21-all when Reza Ghara’s spike went out. UPCN took the set 26-24 with the kill by Theo and the block by Olteanu against Javad Hosseinabadi. Martin Ramos had 6 points in the first set.

Kal-Kalleh took the lead 8-7. Nadi served one ace for the 11-9 advantage. UPCN combined three spikes in a row by Theo, Martin Ramos and Javier Filardi to take the lead 15-14. Sajjadi and Filardi traded spikes for the 16-15 score in favor of UPCN at the second TTO. At 17-all a red card was showed to Kal-Kalleh’s captain Nadi, but the Iranians tied at 20-all via block by Jadidi against Olteanu. The Argentinean club took a 22-20 advantage with spikes by Theo and Lucas Tell and won 25-22 with the kill by Ramos, who again totaled six points.

UPCN led 8-7 in the third set with Olteanu breaking the tie at 7-7 going to the first pause, and then 16-15 with the block by Lopes against Sajjadi. Kal-Kalleh tied at 21 with one ace by Milad Ebadipour. Theo and Ramos scored with spikes for 24-22. Theo closed it 25-23 with a parallel shot from the right side.

Lokomotiv’s strong blocking helped for the 5-1 lead. The Russian club led 8-3 at the first TTO. Ben Abdallah and Samir Sellam attacked and blocked to cut the distance to 8-5. Lokomotiv maintained the five-point difference at the second TTO and ended winning the first set 25-21.

Astashenkov scored four points as also did Sportif Sfaxien’s Ben Abdallah, Ismaeil Moalla and Noureddine Hfaiedh.Volvich broke a tie at 7-7 with a huge spike for the Lokomotiv advantage at the first pause of the second set. Sportif Sfaxien capitalized on a bad streak of the Russian side to take a 13-10 lead. Lokomotiv recovered to even the score at 13-13, but Ben Abdallah landed his spike and Moalla’s serve was good for 15-13. The Tunisian club led 16-14 at the second TTO following the spike down the middle by Omar Agrebi. They went on to surprisingly win the second set 25-20 against one Lokomotiv side without setter Alexander Bubko and opposite Pavel Moroz.

In the third set Lokomotiv started with the first unit and led 8-5 at the first TTO.  Then slowed down a little but managed to stay in front 16-14. At 17-15, Butko, Volvih and Leonenko put together a streak for a 20-16 score. Lokomotiv won 25-19.

Sportif Sfaxien led 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical stops of the fourth set. Moalla scored one ace that dropped off the net and Zouari blocked Moroz for 18-14. Ben Abdallah landed one of his powerful shot for 20-17. The Tunisian club took the fourth set 25-22 with Ben Abdallah totaling seven points.

Teams were tied at 6-6 in the tie-breaker when Ben Abdallah and Moalla scored consecutive spikes. Divis and Leonenko tied the score at 8 but then Ben Abdallah and Moalla collected two straight spikes for the 10-8 advantage. Ben Abdallah blocked Leonenko and later scored with a soft tip for 12-9. Moalla crashed his serve and Moroz imitated him. At 14-13, Volvich served two aces with floating serves to give Lokomotiv the 16-15 advantage. The set closed 17-15 when Astashenkov blocked Ben Abdallah.

Alexandre Ferreira and Tsvetan Sokolov each scored five points in the first set to carry Trentino Diatec. The defending champions arrived into the first technical time-out 8-5 when Ferreira blocked Kunihiro Shimizu.  Trentino maintained the three-point margin at the second TTO (16-13). They never stopped and went on to take the first set 25-18.

Tatsuya Fukuzawa scored four points for the Panasonic Panthers in the first set.It was the turn for Filippo Lanza in the second set. He scored three points in the early part for an 8-5 lead of Trentino. When play resumed Lanza scored two aces around one opponent error for the 11-5 score. The Italian team was in front 16-9 at the second TTO relying on the strong blocking from Ferreira and Matteo Burgsthaler. Trentino won the second set 25-19.

Panasonic took an 8-6 lead in the third set with consecutive spikes by Shinja Yamazoe and Shinji Kawamura to break the tie at 6-6. Trentino came back strong to win three consecutive points capped by the block by Sokolov against Shimizu. The Italian club was in front 16-15 at the second TTO. Michele Fedrizzi blocked Shimizu for a two-point difference (18-16) when the Panthers called for time-out. Fredizzi blocked Kawamura and Dante Amaral committed an attacking error from the back court for a 20-16 score. The third set closed at 25-22.
