Comfort and complimentary snacks: a luxury hotel right in the centre of Adelaide

Examining the mini bar offering is arguably one of the first activities undertaken when one checks in to a hotel. While a packet of perfectly crisp salt and vinegar chips might not get a second glance at the grocery store, all of a sudden, its presence in a hotel room becomes mouth-watering, not to mention eye-watering, when you take into account the inflated price tag.
At the Mayfair Hotel in Adelaide, the mini bar is complimentary – a rarity when it comes to upscale accommodation such as this, but delightful on all accounts. It is the little things – just like the mini bar – that make this Adelaide hotel a marvellous choice, be it for business, pleasure, or a just spot of midnight snacking.
Located right in the thick of the Rundle Mall shopping precinct, the Mayfair Hotel is walking distance to numerous attractions, including the Adelaide Central Market, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and numerous dining options. And at only 20 minutes from the airport, its central positioning will put you in good stead for all the South Australian city has to offer.
The building itself was constructed back in 1930 by The Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society under the guidance of father-and-son architectural duo, Hennessey, Hennessey & Co. The Romanesque-style façade has a particular sense of grandeur; and offers a suitable entry point to the elegant rooms, which are filled with dark timber and crystal cabinetry, velvet armchairs, and marble side tables.
The pièce de résistance is of course the bed – a wonderfully plush, pillow-topped cloud that was the winner of the 30 mattresses originally tested for the job – the buffet breakfast at Mayflower Restaurant downstairs may well be the only legitimate reason to pull yourself out. If you prefer a more casual dining experience, The Den serves up classics like tuna niçoise salad and a killer club sandwich. If you’re travelling on business, it makes for a convenient meeting spot, too.
If you fancy yourself a tipple (because let’s be honest, who doesn’t when they’re on vacation?) let the rooftop Hennessey Bar – named after the original architects – be your first port of call. During the summer months, head up on a Friday afternoon, order a house cocktail, and enjoy the live music. Chase it with dinner at the local haunt Shobosho for fresh Japanese fare – think yakitori, boa, and noodle dishes using local, seasonal produce.
Seeing as the Mayfair Hotel is only one street away, wrap up your stay with a quick bout of shopping at Rundle Street Mall: David Jones, Tiffany & Co. and Mecca are our picks.
