Chelsea force Liverpool’s hand with £60m January swoop

Chelsea have ‘triggered immediate interest’ from Liverpool in RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

Liverpool – and particularly Jurgen Klopp – are long-term admirers of German international Werner.

A report in November suggested that the Reds would sign the forward on the condition that he agree to be back-up during a settling-in period.

But Chelsea could force the hand of the European champions as the Sunday Mirror claim they ‘have already opened negotiations’ to sign him.

Liverpool had wanted to wait until the summer to make their move but may now act to prevent a direct Premier League rival from signing a major target in January.

Leipzig are unlikely to want to lose their top scorer and best player in the midst of a Bundesliga title challenge but could find a potential £60m tug of war irresistible.
