Following Phoebe Philo’s nearly decade-long reign at French fashion house, Celine, Hedi Slimane’s appointment to the role in 2018 heralded a new era for the house. Almost from the moment Slimane took over from Philo, the change was felt. Shortly after taking on the role, Slimane debuted a new Celine logo without the accent over the ‘e’, heralding a new era for the brand.

Fast forward to August 2019 and the creative director has revealed his next project for the house: a fragrance collection. According to a press release from the brand, Slimane has created a “Haute Parfumerie” fragrance collection for Celine, consisting of 11 unisex fragrances covering both day and night.

The 11 scents include evocatively-named fragrances such as Reptile, Black Tie, Eau de Californie, Cologne Française, Saint-Germain-Des-Prés and according to the press statement, Slimane’s starting point for the collection was his “olfactory journal, where each perfume relies on the memory of emotions, on a specific memory or the narrative of [Slimane]”. The fragrances are all, per the release, linked through one “powdery note, highly prized by the couturier [Slimane].”

According to US , the scents themselves, while having this one, signature powdery note linking them, were inspired by “smoky Parisian nightclubs and French perfumery in the ‘60s and ‘70s”, with fragrance notes that include “iris, rose, tree moss, or chypre accord”.

From the first images of the collection, the distinctive Art Deco-style rectangular Celine Haute Parfumerie bottles appear to be in line with the unisex nature of the range and would adorn any his, hers, theirs or non-gender-specific bathroom vanity in sophisticated ‘Gram-worthy style. According to the press release, the bottles were designed by Slimane, 51, “in keeping with the great tradition of French glassmaking.”

This isn’t Slimane’s first foray into fragrance, back in 2001 the designer, who was creative director for menswear at Christin Dior at the time, helmed the launch of Dior Homme’s fragrance, Higher.

Per the press statement, nine of the 11 scents from the Celine Haute Parfumerie collection will be available from late October from Celine boutiques, with the remaining two launching in 2020.
