The kings and queens of music and British royalty united at the London premiere of Disney’s long-awaited The Lion King on Sunday evening at Leicester Square.

Held in support of Prince Harry’s work for The Royal Foundation, the star-studded affair unfolded on the yellow carpet, where celebrities descended to celebrate the Disney film and usher in a new era since the original animation was released 25 years ago.

And, in a fashionable encounter between Meghan Markle and Beyoncé (each royals in their own right), an allegiance of style solidified the Duchess of Sussex as a fan of the Run the World singer as the two matched in Beyhive black and yellow.

For those not in the know, the Beyhive represents the legions of fans that have long supported the American singer-cum-actress, whose audience on Instagram alone tallies 129 million followers. A play on the singer’s name, black and yellow have become synonymous with Beyoncé’s brand, with fans regularly sporting these colours while showing up to support.

Beyoncé, who lends her voice to the role of Nala in the movie, arrived at the premiere in a custom-made mustard yellow Cong Tri gown, which featured an asymmetrical neckline and a high slit, and which she paired with monochromatic heels and earrings. Markle, in a bold contrast to the carpet, made an appearance in a knee-length Jason Wu black dress, with sheer panels and sleeves and slingback black heels, which she paired with a slicked back bun and minimal jewellery.

Introduced on the yellow carpet for all to see, Markle and Beyoncé embraced with Prince Harry and Jay-Z standing nearby. As the two hugged, their ensembles came together (however unplanned) in perfect Beyhive colours.

The Duchess of Sussex is a long-time fan of the pop icon, with her since deleted Instagram once a treasure trove of Bey references. Fans were eagerly awaiting this meeting, particularly after Beyoncé reciprocated the fandom with dedicating her Brit Award to Markle back in April.

Alongside the entertainment industry heavyweights and royal couple, other notable celebrity appearances included Elton John, Pharrell Williams, Guy Ritchie and Vin Diesel.

To coincide with the film’s release, the Walt Disney Company unveiled a global conservation campaign—its hashtag #ProtectThePride—to protect the endangered lion population in Africa. As part of this campaign, the official Sussex family Instagram announced that Disney made a donation to Prince Harry’s upcoming environment initiative, set to be revealed in the coming months.
