Barnes ‘delighted’ to sign ‘no-brainer’ new Leicester deal

Leicester academy graduate Harvey Barnes has signed a new five-year contract following his breakthrough season with the Foxes.

The 21-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Sky Bet Championship side West Brom but was recalled in January after scoring nine times in six appearances for the Baggies.

He subsequently made 16 appearances for Leicester, scoring his first Premier League goal against West Ham in April and won a place in England’s Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Championships.

“I’m delighted. For me, the progression that I’ve had at the club, from joining at such an early age to the position I’m in now, is something I want to continue, so when a new contract was mentioned, it was a no-brainer,” he told LCFC TV.

“There’s going to be a lot of work going in over pre-season, and I think as a team we’re really strong at the minute, so next year could be a big year for us.”

Barnes joined Leicester’s academy at the age of nine and made his first-team debut against Porto in the Champions League in December 2016.

He joined League One MK Dons on loan for the second half of that season, scoring five goals in 23 appearances.

Barnes then finished joint-winner of the Golden Boot after scoring four goals for England Under-20s in the Toulon tournament before joining Barnsley on loan, scoring five times in 25 games before being recalled in January.

He made his domestic debut for Leicester against Fleetwood in the third round of the FA Cup and his Premier League bow came against Southampton in April 2018 ahead of going to West Brom for a short loan spell at the start of last season.
