B.A.A. Distance Medley Registration to Open January 23

 

Exclusive
Three-Race Registration Window Will Extend for One Week.

 

 

BOSTON ‰ÛÒ The Boston Athletic
Association (B.A.A.) today announced that registration for the 2013 B.A.A.
Distance Medley will begin at 10:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, and
will continue until Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. ET. During this
exclusive registration window, runners interested in entering all three of the
B.A.A. Distance Medley events will have the opportunity to sign up for the
series. Registration will be held online at www.baa.org
and will be limited to the first 2,500 registrants. Each of the three races will
have its own maximum field size limit.

 

The B.A.A. Distance Medley will begin with the B.A.A. 5K on April 14,
2013, followed by the B.A.A. 10K on June 23, and the B.A.A. Half Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and
the Jimmy Fund, on October 13. Each of the three races will have its own prize
purse. In addition, the male and female B.A.A. Distance Medley champions will
earn $100,000 in prize money. The individual male and female series champions
will be determined by the lowest cumulative gun time over the three races.

‰ÛÏBased on the success of the inaugural B.A.A. Distance Medley in 2012,
which helped celebrate our organization‰Ûªs 125th Anniversary,
we are pleased to continue the series in 2013,‰Û said B.A.A. Executive
Director Tom Grilk. ‰ÛÏThe
B.A.A. Distance Medley is a series around which many local runners gear their
running plans, and it provides a competitive opportunity for interested
professional runners.‰Û

 

Everyone who completes the B.A.A. Distance Medley will receive a
special commemorative medal for the series in addition to receiving a
finisher‰Ûªs medal for each race. Each runner will also be listed on the
B.A.A. Distance Medley Leader Board, which displays the top male and female
competitors throughout the series. Each runner who registers for the entire
B.A.A. Distance Medley this January will receive a unique bib number to be used
throughout the series indicating they are B.A.A. Distance Medley participants. In
2012, a total of 1492 runners registered for the B.A.A. Distance Medley and 931
runners completed the series.

 

The B.A.A. Distance Medley registration window of January 23 through
January 31 is only available to runners who wish to sign up for all three
events in the series. The cost to register for the B.A.A. Distance Medley is
$175 (USD). The minimum age for entry into the B.A.A. Distance Medley is 14
years old. Runners interested in registering for only one or two of the three
events in the series must do so when registration opens for those individual
races.

 

In addition to the registration dates for the B.A.A. Distance Medley,
the B.A.A. has established the registration dates for the individual events of
the series for 2013.

Last year marked the inaugural running of the B.A.A. Distance Medley,
and Allan Kiprono (KEN) was the men‰Ûªs champion. After placing 5th
in both the B.A.A. 5K and B.A.A. 10K with times of 13:48 and 28:37,
respectively, Kiprono ran an event record time of 1:01:44 to win the B.A.A.
Half Marathon. His cumulative time was
1:44:09.

 

Kim Smith (NZL) was the women‰Ûªs B.A.A. Distance Medley champion in
2012. Smith placed 3rd at the B.A.A. 5K in 15:26 before setting a
course record of 31:36 in her victory at the B.A.A. 10K. She won the B.A.A.
Half Marathon in 1:10:57, giving her a
cumulative time of 1:57:59. Kiprono and Smith both received $100,000 in prize
money for their victories.
