Art is the new fashion
The art world is fusing onto what was once the domain of fashion: trendsetting, pushing fashion’s contemporary boundaries and hosting some of the most hedonistic parties around. The art-in crowd are picking up and ditching new trends at the speed of fashion. This hasn’t gone by unnoticed by the fashion world, and established houses and luxury labels are setting up foundations, galleries and competitions in a bid to incorporate artistic patronage.
Louis Vuitton this year joined the list of art sponsoring (such as Prada, Cartier and Max Mara) in launching Espace Louise Vuitton above their flagship Paris boutique. There, an exhibit by Vanessa Beecroft sees performance art meet fashion. Near nude models draped across monogrammed Vuitton luggage and a series of 12 photographs of nudges to form the letters of the Louis Vuitton logo.
Artists M/M Paris, who’s current exhibition at the Haunch of Venison launched during London Fashion Week, merge art, music and fashion in a way that re-appraises the nature of communication and formation of identity. Fashion, in its way, pushes the same boundaries, but the spirit, glamour and wealth that was once fashion’s domain is now just as relevant to the art world. Didn’t we see Tracey Emin sporting the latest Marc Jacobs creations during London Fashion Week?
