Arsenal interested in both play-off goalkeepers
Arsenal have an interest in the Championship play-off final that goes beyond discovering if they will face Brentford or Swansea next season.
According to The Athletic, the Gunners are interested in both Brentford keeper David Raya and Swansea stopper Freddie Woodman and the losing player could move to Arsenal this summer.
Raya is said to be a long-term target for Arsenal, nominated by goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, but it is presumed that the Spaniard would stay with the Bees for at least another season if they were promoted.
Brentford and a quest to avoid their own La Decima
But the Gunners are also interested in Woodman, who has enjoyed a brilliant season on loan at Swansea from Newcastle. It is a deal that would likely be made permanent if the Swans are victorious at Wembley.
So we might be left in the curious situation of Arsenal signing whichever goalkeeper makes an error in the final.
Arsenal’s preference is reportedly a young, developing goalkeeper (who qualifies as homegrown) rather than an experienced back-up for Bernd Leno, who could yet push from a move from north London himself.
The Athletic have put together a detailed assessment of Arsenal’s transfer requirements this summer, with the club said to be ‘interested in goalkeepers, defenders across every position, plus central midfielders and No 10s’.
The priority seems to be for the latter, with a permanent deal (or second loan) for Martin Odegaard a priority, though that might have been complicated by Zinedine Zidane leaving Real Madrid.
Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell and Hibernian’s Josh Doig are mentioned as possible left-back options, while Arsenal are also reportedly chasing a right-back as Hector Bellerin and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are set to leave this summer.
In central midfield, Brighton’s Yves Bissouma and Sheffield United’s Sander Berge are said to be targets to replace the outgoing Granit Xhaka, while Dani Ceballos has gone back to Spain after his loan spell.
There is no mention of any pursuit for wingers despite the gossip on Saturday morning claiming that Arsenal are interested in both Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez from Manchester City, who have scored 14 goals each this season.
