The dictionary meaning of the word “short” may relate to a small amount of something—distance, time, length of an item of clothing—but when it comes to the style staple, namely shorts, we’re presented with a surprisingly lengthy list of different iterations.

From always on-trend denim, to the tailored midi, to over-the-knee and even bicycle shorts, there is an overwhelming large number of styles and looks to choose from in this one clothing category. And, with shorts being a key sartorial secret behind the chicest summer wardrobes it’s important to invest in the right style that will make summer dressing effortless.

But, what style of short is going to make the forthcoming 2019/2020 summer, the summer your wardrobe works together in sartorial harmony? It depends on a number of factors, such as the type of summer you have planned and what your style profile is.

For instance, if you’re planning a summer filled with music festival attendances and endless beach days, denim shorts are going to serve you well. Denim shorts are the unofficial festival uniform beloved by frequent festival-goers and off-duty models alike. Cut-off raw-edged fringed versions in faded, vintage blue hues are always in style or go for a darker denim with a cuffed hem for a timeless option.

For those fashion-forward short-wearers seeking a bang on-trend look, this summer it’s all about the long short. The over-the-knee look took over street style at New York Fashion Week in September and is the short style of the season. Fitted, tailored or relaxed-fit, there are multiple varieties to consider. If you’re thinking long shorts will be your office uniform for this coming summer opt in for a polished pair with a matching oversized blazer.

Speaking of polished, a midi pair of tailored shorts is another office appropriate summer look. Pick a summery pastel hue or neutral coloured tailored short add a romantic puff-sleeved blouse and you’ve got yourself a look that will take you from the office to a summer evening soirée.

For the athleisure-loving among us consider the bicycle short this summer. It’s so versatile it can be dressed up with a blazer or worn to the gym. It’s also a style celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Emily Ratajkowski have really leaned into this year.
