All the jewellery Meghan Markle has been gifted or borrowed from the royal family
In celebration of the union of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex–who wed at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19 in what will undoubtedly go down as one of the most talked about royal weddings in recent years–we thought it only best to look back on the history of their relationship thus far and catalogue each and every piece of jewellery Markle has been gifted or borrowed from the royal family. Think everything from her baptism diamond cross bracelet and engagement ring to Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, which she wore when she walked down the aisle on the arm of Prince Charles. Scroll down to see every royal-worthy jewel the Duchess chose to accessorise her ever-so-chic outfits with below.
Beaded bracelet
Just weeks prior to the official announcement of their relationship status, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were spotted wearing matching blue and white beaded bracelets in late 2016, which were reportedly sourced by Harry on one of his many trips to Africa. Markle shared an image of herself sporting the bracelet during a trip to Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire on her Instagram account, which has since been shut down, leading many to believe the two were an item after Harry was seen wearing the same piece at a charity event which he attended in an effort to support the Naz Project’s Joyful Noise Choir.
Engagement ring
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement was announced by Kensington Palace on November 27, 2017, the highly–anticipated ring was also revealed. Harry proposed to Markle with a yellow gold engagement ring that featured three diamonds set in white gold-two of which he selected from Princess Diana’s personal collection and another sourced from Botswana, where the couple holidayed together in the early days of their relationship.
Baptism bracelet
Following her baptism and confirmation, Markle was gifted a keepsake silver-chained, diamond cross bracelet by Prince Harry which she paired with a matching white gold horizontal bar bracelet made by jeweller Birks. Markle was reportedly baptised in a primate ceremony at Chapel Royal in St James’s Palace, London in early March ahead of her wedding in May.
Gold wedding band
Meghan Markle’s wedding band was crafted by British jeweller Cleave & Company from the royal family’s personal collection of Welsh gold. The traditional gold band closely resembles the same worn by the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, Princess Diana and Kate Middleton–all of which were made from the same nugget mined from Welsh mine, Clogau St. David’s at Bontddu.
Queen Mary’s Filigree tiara
Meghan Markle walked down the aisle to marry Prince Harry on May 19 wearing Queen Mary’s Filigree diamond bandeau tiara, lent to her by Queen Elizabeth II. The brilliant diamond and platinum piece which sat atop her up-do dates back to 1932, was complete with a detachable centre broach from as early as 1893. The tiara, which also features a flexible band, was gifted to Queen Elizabeth II by Queen Mary in 1953.
Aquamarine cocktail ring
What can now surely be considered one of Markle’s most prized possessions, Prince Harry gifted his wife Princess Diana’s aquamarine cocktail ring which she debuted when she stepped out in a bespoke Stella McCartney gown before leaving to attend her second reception, hosted at Frogmore House. The ring, which also doubled as Markle’s “something borrowed”, was first worn by Prince Harry’s mother in 1997 when she attended an auction of her own wardrobe at Christies.
Aquamarine cocktail ring
Meghan Markle wore Princess Diana’s aquamarine ring again during the royal couple’s tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga. The duchess wore the ring during the Tonga leg of the tour to attend a reception and dinner hosted by King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u of Tonga. Flash forward to March 2019 and one outlet reported Meghan Markle had been banned by the Queen from wearing jewellery from the Royal Collection including pieces that belonged to the late Princess Diana. However, that report proved to be false with Vanity Fair reporting a royal source said “The duchess has worn pieces from the Royal Collection before so why would that stop now?”
Diamond and pearl drop earrings
In celebration of their first outing together—the pair took the royal train to Cheshire to open a bridge, visit a theatre and eat lunch at the city council—The Queen gifted Markle a pair of diamond and pearl drop earrings, which just so happened to match her own. Now if that doesn’t say welcome to the family, then we don’t know what does.
Gold butterfly-shaped earrings and bracelet
Meghan Markle kicked off day one of her 2018 Australian tour at Admiralty House Sydney in October wearing a set of Princess Diana’s gold and diamond butterfly-shaped earrings and a gold bracelet with blue stones—which Prince Harry presumably gifted following their May 19 nuptials.
Cartier diamond tennis bracelet
The Duchess sported a white gold Cartier diamond tennis bracelet on the first day of her Fiji tour, which is said to have been a wedding gift from Prince Charles. She also reportedly wore the bracelet the evening before her May 19 nuptials, along with to the 70th birthday of Prince Charles.
Pavé-set eternity ring
When Meghan Markle paused her maternity leave to make an appearance at Queen Elizabeth II’s Trooping the Colour birthday celebrations in June 2019, she was spotted wearing a diamond band, which sat neatly alongside her engagement ring and wedding band. People has since confirmed that the silver pavé-set ring was a gift from her husband, Prince Harry. Whether the special occasion was the birth of their son or their first wedding anniversary, remains to be known. Take a closer look at Markle’s sparkling new accessory here.
