September 19, 2019: We’re here to wish you a very merry Christmas with this latest news–a movie inspired by the iconic music video for Wham’s Last Christmas is coming!
According to Deadline, Universal Pictures has acquired the rights for the film, which will keep the title of the famed song originally written by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. The script is set to be inspired by the backstory of the tale of love that plays out in the music video for the song and will be written by Emma Thompson. Deadline is reporting Bryony Kimmings will co-write while Paul Feig is attached to direct.
The details are currently scarce but the holiday romance will be set in London and will explore the story we see in the four minute music video released in 1984, except in movie-length detail.
Now, we’ve finally got information as to who is starring in the film. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed actors Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding will star in the holiday romance. Clarke is preparing to wrap up the final season of hit HBO series Game of Thrones, while Golding is currently soaking up his new-found levels of fame since starring in his first feature film, Crazy Rich Asians, this year.
George Michael is said to have approved the film before his 2016 death, meaning all of your Christmas dreams are coming true with the late musician’s blessings. No release date is scheduled but we assume it will be slated for a 2018 release.
