When the news broke that celebrated German photographer, Peter Lindbergh, had sadly passed away on September 3, 2019, tributes from the fashion and celebrity world started pouring in.

Over his more than four-decade career, the 74-year-old had worked with so many leading names and up-and-coming stars from the fashion world, celebrity circles and even royalty, capturing them for cover shoots — many of which were for Vogue — and other projects and commissions including the iconic 2017 Pirelli Calendar.

Lindbergh was renowned for his incredible ability to photograph his subjects looking natural, and was equally well-known for eschewing retouching, preferring to keep his photographs original and without subjection to filters and retouching aids. Indeed, Meghan Markle, who he shot for her 2017 cover, reportedly said she was thrilled to work with the German photographer for the cover because she knew it would mean the world finally see her freckles. Markle also reportedly personally selected Lindbergh to shoot the 15 women for the cover of the September 2019 issue of British, an issue she guest-edited.

Of all the covers he shot and A-list names he worked with — including Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and of course, the Duchess of Sussex — perhaps one of his most iconic career highlights was shooting the British 1990 cover featuring Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford, who of course, became the original ‘90s supermodels.

The German photographer was considered a visionary in the fashion photography field and has left behind an incredible legacy.

From the Duchess of Sussex to Kaia Gerber and Linda Evangelista, we share how the fashion and celebrity world has paid tribute to Peter Lindbergh.

The Duchess of Sussex on Instagram:

“Honouring the life and work of photographer Peter Lindbergh. His work is revered globally for capturing the essence of a subject and promoting healthy ideals of beauty, eschewing photoshopping, and preferring natural beauty with minimal makeup. The Duchess of Sussex had worked with Peter in the past and personally chose him to shoot the 15 women on the cover for the September issue of British Vogue, which she guest edited. There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life. “Forces for Change” was the one of the esteemed photographer’s final published projects. He will be deeply missed.” Photo ©@therealpeterlindbergh / ©SussexRoyal

I felt myself when he took my picture (this doesn’t happen much). I felt beautiful as I was. Miss you already Peter. ? ”

“From childhood, I have always felt that black and white photographs had a special texture to them. After becoming a model, I discovered that they reflected a sense of time and power as well.
