Magnolias hold a special place in our hearts. They flower in late winter, reassuring chilled onlookers that spring is just around the corner. Their audacious blooms on bare branches are a sight to behold, with no foliage to distract the eye from masses of pink, white and purple petals.

However, magnolias are a relatively new plant in the west. Originally found in cold regions of China, including the Himalayas, they first arrived in the United Kingdom in the late 1700s. They were promptly deemed far ‘too sensual’ for buttoned-up British gardens – if you showed a man an orchid, he’d likely keel over and require smelling salts for revival, as per the tales go.

Today, magnolias are beloved the world over. In Los Angeles, stylist to the stars Jeff Leatham cites the white grandiflora species as his absolute favourite. So does Sydney’s own famed florist, Saskia Havekes. Acclaimed landscape designer Paul Bangay recommends them to people who like to cut and display vibrant green foliage in their homes, while Michelle Adams, founder of themaryn.com, makes garlands from their leaves to decorate her house at Christmas time.

A popular plant everywhere cold enough to conjure the sumptuous blossoms (they prefer cool and temperate climates), there are now many different species of magnolia that vary in colour and size. They’re pretty, relatively easy to care for, and a well-placed one can add value to your property – so it’s worth scheduling any open-for-inspection times to coincide with a burst of soft-pink blooms.

It appears Englishmen have come to terms with the sensuality of the flowers, as magnolias are now a common and celebrated sight in British parks and gardens. In springtime, many London townhouses have stunning trees in bloom out the front of their homes. It’s enough to make their 18th-century countrymen blush.
