Everything you need to know about the 2019 Emmy Awards

The 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards are just weeks away from kicking off. Following last year’s ceremony, which left us with plenty of meme-worthy moments, an epic on-stage proposal, and history-making nominations, we are ready and waiting for what this year’s show has in store for us.

Returning for its 71st edition, the ceremony will once again be singing its praises for—and, of course, awarding—the best that television has had to offer over the past year. A number previous award-winning shows have scored nominations in the double digits, including Game of Thrones and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And of course, as with any major awards event comes red carpet looks worthy of awards in their own right.

From the air date, to the host and the nominations, scroll on to read up on all you need to know about the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Emmy Awards is an American awards ceremony recognising accomplishments specifically in television.

Held every year—from 1949 to the present—in the United States, the nominations within the ceremony cover televised releases that have aired from June of the previous year to May of the current year, and are now presented by three bodies: the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (IATAS).

And while we commonly refer to the Emmys as simply the ceremony that makes it to air (which is formally dubbed the Primetime Emmy Awards), Daytime Emmy Awards, Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards and Regional Emmy Awards are also presented throughout the year.

Wondering where the term ‘Emmy’ came from? We’re glad you asked. The word ‘Emmy’ derives from the term ‘immy’, which refers to a camera tube used in TV production, which was then feminised in the French language to match the female statue represented in the trophy.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 22 from 8pm EST in the US. This means it will hit our small screens on Monday, September 23 from 10am Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) and 8am Eastern Time (ET).

Just like the Oscars ceremony back in February, this year’s Emmy Awards won’t have a host. This is only the fourth time in its 71-year history the ceremony won’t have a host. Justifying the decision back in August, CEO of Fox Entertainment—who is airing the ceremony in the US—Charlie Collier said, “If you have a host and an opening, that’s 15 or 20 minutes you can‘t have to salute the shows.” Collier added: “There will be entertainment, there will be an opening number, there will be surprises.” So we’re hoping for some pretty show-stopping on-stage productions and jokes to fill the hosting void.

Just as it has for the past four years, this year’s ceremony will be held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.

The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be airing live on FOX8 from 10am on Monday, September 23.

Having revealed the nominations for 2019 back in July, this year’s show will see a number of Emmy Award-winning shows receiving nominations once again. With the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones receiving a record-breaking 32 nominations, and both The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Chernobyl following suit with 20 and 19 nominations respectively, we’re already suspecting a slightly slim number of shows gaining wins. In terms of which other shows are up for a gong, we’ve rounded up every single nomination for the 2019 Emmy Awards, here.
