British pop sensation Ellie Goulding married her fiancé, Caspar Jopling on August 31 in a traditional ceremony at York Minster. The wedding dress befitting of the star and the couple’s grand cathedral setting? A bespoke Chloé silk crêpe gown, hand-embroidered with White Rose of York symbols. In the days before her wedding, the bride spoke exclusively to Vogue about the details of her modern fairytale wedding and the historical muse that inspired her breathtaking gown.

How early did you start planning what you were going to wear?
“I was way too chilled about the dress at the start, I think I was scared and holding out for something really special. I’ve been working closely with my friend and stylist Nathan Klein to select the right shoes and mind-blowing jewellery from Bulgari. In truth, the dresses are so exquisite they really speak for themselves!”

Were there any famous brides on your moodboard?
“I’ve always loved timeless bridal looks, from Princess Anne and Bianca Jagger to the Princess of Monaco [Grace Kelly], and I wanted to bring together modern and traditional elements.

How did the Chloé dress come about?
Chloé is intrinsically romantic and [the house’s creative director] Natacha Ramsay-Levi has a vision that is so modern and relevant that I knew it would fit with the themes of my wedding. I have loved the house and its incredible team for years so it only seemed right for Chloé to play a big part in this special day. Natacha worked alongside me to design something timeless and classic, but with all the Chloé spirit. Some of my inspiration for my Chloé gown ultimately came from historical brides, particularly Jane Seymour, whose dress was decorated with beautiful embroidery.”

What was your reaction when you first stepped into the (almost) finished dress?
“I was invited to go to Paris to meet Natacha and see the dress in its later stages and had planned to take two friends along for a day of culture. We were hoping to take in some exhibitions and enjoy a relaxed lunch at Hotel D’Amour (fittingly), but the reality ended up being in and out in two hours on the Eurostar. I have never felt more special than the moment I first stepped into the dress during the fitting in Paris, and it was utterly awe inspiring to see the craftsmanship and attention to detail. She has the most incredible vision.”

Tell us everything you love about your wedding dress?
“Natacha has created the most delicate and unique dress from the specific references and ideas that I gave her. I was rendered totally speechless when I saw it come to life. The dress itself is made of silk crêpe, hand embroidered with White Roses of York and subtly embellished with white glass beads, doubled with a silk radzimir petticoat. Overall, I know the Chloé ateliers spent hundreds of hours to bring the design to life. The veil is made of a delicate silk tulle and organza, and embroidered with our initials—E and C. My bridesmaids will also be wearing Chloé—bespoke pale blue dresses in silk cadi, embroidered with a tone-on-tone organza braid.”

What other fashion looks will you be wearing during your wedding celebrations?
“I’ve been lucky enough to work closely with some of my all-time favourite designers. Stella McCartney, who I adore, loaned me some diamonds for the day, which are my something borrowed! Ralph & Russo have collaborated on my favourite piece from their autumn/winter ’19/’20 collection—it’s a bodice of pearls and silk, which I will be wearing with an evening skirt, before switching a pair of classic white tailored trousers for the reception. I was excited to do something a bit different after the ceremony itself. I have a special Stella McCartney dress for when guests arrive at Castle Howard, and Balmain have also been so generous with their time. Olivier [Rousteing] has made me the most fun dress to dance the night away in. I don’t want to give too much away but each look is so unique and I can’t thank the designers and houses enough for being a part of the day.”

What about your wedding beauty looks?
“The key is to look and feel like myself on the day. My best friend, bridesmaid and long standing make-up artist Lucy Wearing will be creating soft, neutral beauty beginning with clean, fresh skin using Capture Dreamskin by Dior. I don’t want anything too heavy for the ceremony, but the focus will be on the eyes. We will build the make-up as we go throughout the evening. Hair stylist Ben Skervin (who I met through my fiancé) is going to be creating my natural up-do for the day, and we’ll go back to long waves for the evening.”

Any pre-wedding beauty advice?
“I trust Exuviance’s deep hydration treatment and Rodial products as I truly believe they work. I also love Tata Harper, everything she makes is vegan. When it comes to facials, Stella [McCartney] introduced me to FaceGym and I have never looked back!”
