Outfit repeaters unite! A brand new season of Lizzie McGuire (LM) is set to hit the small screen and our early aught teen drama-loving hearts could not feel more fulfilled.
Making the reprise official, Hilary Duff—who starred in the titular role over a span of three years—stepped on-stage at this weekend’s Disney Plus D23 Expo event to announce the return of the series, which she simultaneously accompanied with an excitement-inducing Instagram post, which saw closet LM fans including Jimmy Fallon, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Ashley Benson celebrating.
But, considering we’ve been holding out for the show’s return since we first sang along to its film adaption’s break-out ditty “This Is What Dreams Are Made Of,” we’ve found ourselves asking “why now?” Well, according to Duff, it’s a particular life milestone of Lizzie’s that saw star and producers unite for a series return.
“What really got me excited was her turning 30 and feeling like she’s going to be there for women in their 30s and all that that comes with, and that was what really sold me,” she said in an interview with Variety, expressing her excitement for those who followed the character’s journey in their teens and will now reunite with her for the next decade in their lives.
“She was everybody’s best friend,” the actress also said of McGuire to Entertainment Weekly. “She was there for such pivotal moments in their preteen life. Entering your 30s is a really big deal… I think it’s just the right time for her to step back in and to have her go along with you in your 30s. All of the fun times and all of the big monumental moments that you’re faced with, I just thought that was such opportunity there for her to be grown up and for her to be there for women again.”

Now that we’re all well and truly beside ourselves with excitement for its return, this is everything we know about the Lizzie McGuire reboot so far:
We know that Lizzie turning 30, and all that comes along with that major milestone, will feature as the predominant storyline. So what else is in store for the character?
According to Duff, Lizzie has been living in New York City, moving away from home for her career. “Her life is framed pretty perfectly,” she told Good Morning America. “She has her dream job [as] an apprentice for an interior designer, who is a pretty big deal,” and she, “has a cute little apartment in Brooklyn.”
But her seemingly ‘perfect’ life doesn’t sound like it will live on past the first episode—which will reportedly centre around her 30th birthday celebrations. “Obviously, nothing’s going to go that perfectly the whole series,” Duff teased. “[Lizzie] gets some pretty big news at the end of the first episode.”
Duff also spoke about the potential for McGuire’s life in New York to be swiftly uprooted. “She’s been living in New York, and I’m not sure how long she’s going to stay there, but that’s going to be all a part of the journey…” she told Entertainment Tonight.
But it’s not all doom and gloom for Lizzie, with Duff hinting at a stellar wardrobe that the fashion-forward Lizzie of the 2000s could only dream of: “ she’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget,” Duff told Variety. Adding that along with a new wardrobe came a new, less disaster-prone, way of life for the character: “…she’s, like, a little cooler. She can kind of, like, keep it together a little better than she used to”.
While there is minimal detail around who will star in the series reboot, we do know of one character whose return we could not be more pleased about—Lizzie’s animated counterpart.
Just as she did throughout the entire ‘00s series, animated Lizzie will be sticking around to help adult Lizzie navigate adult life. But unlike real-life Lizzie, her sketched sidekick never left her teens, remaining 13 in the new series. “That was really important for me to keep her at 13, because I think that’s what’s so endearing,” Duff said to Good Morning America of the decision.
Just as exciting is the decision to keep her outfit the same, which was confirmed to Variety, and honestly, we cannot wait for the return of the midriff pink top, hip-hugger jeans and orange platform sandals to make their animated comeback.
One other character that has been confirmed for the series return is Lizzie’s fiancé. Yes, Lizzie got engaged! But grab the tissue box, because it’s not David “Gordo” Gordon, who we last saw was set to become Lizzie’s main squeeze following a very sweet first kiss on an Italian rooftop. We guess they never made it past high school. Her fiancé, who is yet to be named, is “a chef at this cool SoHo restaurant,” Duff spilled.
But is there a chance Gordo is still in Lizzie’s life? Duff isn’t giving that much-anticipated detail away. “I have to play it coy, but there are a lot of surprises in store,” she also revealed to GMA. “Everyone’s dreams are going to be fulfilled by going on the journey of the show.”
And will we be seeing the return of her other BFF Miranda, Ethan Craft, frenemy Kate Sanders, her brother Matt or her quirky parents, Jo and Sam? “I think the chances are high. I can’t tell too much but I think people are going to be very surprised and excited,” Duff told Entertainment Tonight.
Although the buzz for the new series could not be louder, the series hasn’t yet kicked off filming as reported by Entertainment Weekly, meaning an air date is unlikely to have been set as yet.
According to the streaming service’s official Instagram, the new series of Lizzie McGuire will be airing on Disney+.
