There is no denying that You, the new cult-followed series of the moment that debuted in Australia on Netflix late last year, has captivated audiences across the globe. Based on a novel written by Caroline Kepnes, the show sees Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley take centre stage as a serial stalker named Joe Goldberg.

With everyone from your friends to the famous faces you follow on social media having already binge-watched the psychological thriller’s entire first season, viewers are anticipating the release of a second.

As such, we thought it only best to keep you up to speed on the progress of season two, as details about the plot line, cast and release date are slowly revealed. Read on to familiarise yourself with all there is to know as you attempt to distract yourself from the sad fact that you’ve now run out of episodes to stream.

Given that season one of You, which was originally produced by Lifetime before being dropped and consequently picked up by Netflix, first aired in the US last September, it’s fair to say that a second season is still a little way off.

In saying that, the showrunner of the series, Sera Gamble, recently confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that filming of the second season has already begun and Netflix has teased a sneak peek into the cast’s first table read. This news has left fans hoping for a mid to late-2019 release date.

As the first season was based on Kepnes’s novel of the same name, it’s a given that the second will follow the story arc that has already been laid out by the book’s sequel, Hidden Bodies.

“The writers are on the Paramount lot and we’re looking for stage space here in LA,” Gamble said of show’s departure from New York. The sequel is said to see Goldberg flee to Los Angeles after framing Dr. Nicky for Beck’s murder.

The book explains that in Hidden Bodies, “Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder” as his past begins to threaten a blossoming new romance.

“The problem with Hidden Bodies is that they don’t always stay that way,” the description continues. “They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried.”

Gamble elaborated on the sea change, telling TV Guide that Goldberg grapples with his move to LA, as “you can’t walk down the goddamn street without someone posing against a selfie wall for their Instagram.”

“You can’t go to a party without ending up on someone’s [Instagram] stories,” she added. “If you want to lay low, if you want to stay out of trouble, if you’re trying not to be known Los Angeles is the wrong place to live.”

While Gamble has confessed that the second season will be a “deeper dive into Joe”, she also admitted that it will veer slightly off the path that has been set out by Hidden Bodies

“There’s a ton of great stuff we are planning on doing from the second book. Starting with setting the new season in Los Angeles,” she explained. “But also, now the show has a life of its own and we are excited to take a few things in a direction that will be surprising to everyone, including fans of the books.”

According to Gamble, season two will also be darker than season one. “I would say that season two of You, kind of, doubles down on some of the stuff that you might come to expect,” she told Us Weekly.

In a recent interview with TV Guide, Gamble also noted that she can think of “at least one scene comes to mind that’s gorier and scarier than anything we had in season one.”

Penn Badgley is set to return as Joe Goldberg, however Gamble has revealed that Paco’s story ended with the lead character’s move from New York–at least for the time being.

“We felt like we’d found a nice spot to rest the Paco story at the end of season one,” she told TV Guide. “But we also felt like we could easily write a season or even a whole new TV show about who Paco is going to grow up to be considering the shit he saw and the shit Joe pulled him into.”

Following the surprise arrival of Candace Stone in the final episode of the first season, actress Ambyr Childers has been confirmed to reprise the role in the second.

“Candace does indeed have a role in season two,” the showrunner told Vulture. “I can say she’s not feeling particularly disposed to be nice to Joe. Joe wasn’t very nice to her, and she’s not feeling all that charitably toward Joe.”

As for why Gamble decided to break from the book’s script, which doesn’t see Candace make a cameo in the first season, she said that she wanted to challenge the assumption that Goldberg had killed her.

Where does Dr. Nicky come in? Gambled explained that he “is in prison and he is ardently protesting his innocence,” before adding that “It’s too soon to say definitely whether John Stamos will return in season two but we have been talking a lot about the character and we’re excited to keep telling that story.”

Netflix has also announced that it has cast 23-year-old actress Victoria Pedretti, best known for her breakout role in the horror hit , as the season’s new female lead. According to , Pedretti will play a produce manager and aspiring young chef named Love Quinn, who inevitably befriends Goldberg before the pair reportedly bond over their shared knowledge of loss.

The second season will also see  Jenna Ortega assume the role of a young con artist named Ellie, and ‘ star James Scully cast as Love Quinn’s brother, Forty. According to , Scully’s role as Forty will see him play a privileged bully who relies on his sister to support him through his 12-step program, however “it never takes much of a shove for him to fall back off the wagon.”

Gotham star Robin Lord Taylor will join Ortega and Scully in season two. It has been revealed that Taylor will play the role of a guy named Will that Deadline describes as someone who “deals with unsavory sorts as part of his job, but is himself a thoughtful, personable, and highly intelligent guy who marches to the beat of his own drummer. That is, until he gets trapped in a bad situation.”

With so much to unpack about the second season of You, now’s certainly the time to watch the first season—if for some reason you’re yet to.
