Australian songwriter Cxloe on her sense of style and genre-defying sound

Following the release of her hotly-anticipated sixth single, Sick featuring Gnash, spoke to Australian singer-songwriter Cxloe about fashion, music, and her upcoming performance at Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out.
The artist, who splits her time between Sydney and Los Angeles, recently returned home to Australia for her first-ever headline tour, after making waves as Maroon 5’s national support act – a feat she describes as a career highlight.
“I get very homesick when I am away so it’s good to be back,” Cxloe told , shortly after it was announced that she is set to perform alongside the likes of Halsey, Vampire Weekend, and Disclosure at Falls Festival in Byron Bay this December.
The singer, whose music is motivated by her own life experiences, shares that she looks to artists like Banks, Lykke Li, and Tove Lo for inspiration. Blending a combination of electronic sounds with alternative undertones, Cxloe has developed a formula for her music that she describes as dark pop.
“It’s always got a dark synth or base running through it,” she explained. “I’m obsessed with pop music but I think the complexity of the lyrics and the conceptual ideas that I have are quite dark. So paired together I would just call it dark pop.”
Set to take to the stage at Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out in Melbourne on August 29 and in Sydney on September 5, Cxloe shares that while she’s yet to attend the shopping extravaganza, she’s eager she finally gets to do so.
“I’ve seen it a lot on social media and I’m so excited that I get to actually perform there,” Cxloe shared, before adding that she also plans to shop on the night. “I’m going to be doing a lot of looking around. I’ve got quite a few shows and a few festivals coming up, so I’m going to be looking out [for clothes] for them,” she confirmed.
Depending on whether she’s going about her day as Chloe Papandrea, a young woman from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, or Cxloe, the persona she takes on when performing for the masses, the singer explained she tends to alternate between two distinct styles.
“I think I’m way more relaxed, everything is oversized,” she told . “I can’t remember the last time I actually wore something that hugged my body.”
“Cxloe with an x is a different story, she is definitely outgoing,” the artist continued, adding that she prefers to pair feminine looks with contrasting elements, like tulle and lace with a touch of leather. “I think it shows the hardness without the harshness. Like my lyrics but the melodies are quite soft.”
