John O’Shea has picked out Rio Ferdinand as Sir Alex Ferguson’s best-ever signing as Manchester United manager.

Ferdinand joined the Red Devils after enjoying successful spells early into his career with West Ham and Leeds United.

The defender made over 50 Premier League appearances for Leeds in two years before his move to Old Trafford in 2002.

Ferguson got his man for around £30m. This made Ferdinand the most expensive British footballer and also the world’s most expensive defender.

The centre back enjoyed a lot of success with Man United over the course of 12 illustrious seasons. He made over 450 appearances for United in all competitions.

Ferdinand is a six-time winner of the Premier League with the Red Devils. He also won the Champions League once and the League Cup twice.

O’Shea spent 13 years at Man United between 1998 and 2011. The Irishman was in the squad as United beat Chelsea in the 2007/08 Champions League final.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, O’Shea picked out Ferdinand as Ferguson’s greatest purchase as Man United boss:

“I’d have to edge it to Rio. In my time, in terms of how consistent he performed. He provided such a foundation for the team. He was a great lad as well.

“When he joined he really settled in well, he knew a lot of the players from England.

“He fitted in well at the time and proved to be a very good signing. People mentioned the price tag a lot but he provided very good value.”
