Alan Shearer has suggested that Liverpool and Manchester City are still the favourites to win the Premier League this season.

This Premier League season is looks set to be one of the most interesting to date. The games being played behind closed doors have already served up some surprise results.

Liverpool and Man City have both been on the end of heavy defeats to Aston Villa and Leicester City respectively.

Each side have suffered major injury blows. Jurgen Klopp’s side are set to be without Virgil Van Dijk for the remainder of the season, while Fabinho and Allison have both missed games.

Sergio Aguero meanwhile has missed the last few games for City due to a hamstring injury.

The two favourites to win the title face off at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon. Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand over Liverpool, but a win would move them two points behind the league champions.

Shearer told The Athletic, as cited by The Metro, that Liverpool and City are still favourites to win the league. He added that City must win on Sunday to boost their chances of beating the Reds to the title:

“At the minute I still think it will be between City and Liverpool. Although Liverpool suffered a huge loss in losing Van Dijk for the season.

“Without playing magnificent football yet, they are top of the league. It should be a great game on Sunday and it’s a game that City need to win because they can’t afford to fall eight points behind.”

It might well be the biggest weekend of the season so far. The two biggest title contenders finally clash in a long-awaited meeting, but will Leicester or Wolves come out on top? Liverpool also play Manchester City or something apparently.
