Streifel Wins Title In Colorado Springs
Four Gopher grapplers headed west to the Rocky Mountains this weekend, competing in the U.S. Collegiate Championships tournament at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. That foursome – Skyler Petry, Carson Brolsma, Will Balow and Rylee Streifel – produced several highlight moments, most notably a heavyweight title for Streifel and a top-10 win for Petry.
Streifel put together the most complete performance among the traveling Gophers, going undefeated Sunday to win the 285-pound championship. He began his day by grinding out a 2-0 victory over Chuck Boddy (Virginia) before opening up the offense for a pair of emphatic victories, first a first-period pin and then a 15-0 tech fall to seal the title. In perhaps the best example of his strength against the field, Streifel did not allow a single point in any of his three matches.
On the other end of the weight-class spectrum, Petry found himself in what was likely the most challenging bracket of all, situated in between NCAA qualifier Barlow McGhee (Missouri) and two-time All-American and tenth-ranked Dylan Peters (Northern Iowa) in his 125-pound bracket. Petry kept pace with McGhee for seven minutes, forcing overtime in their match, but a takedown by the Tiger in sudden victory dropped Petry, 3-1. Showing admirable resolve after that tough defeat, Petry came back and knocked off Peters, 7-5, later in the afternoon. The win is a career best for Petry – Peters’ No. 10 ranking is the highest of any opponent Petry has defeated while at Minnesota.
Brolsma came out firing at 149 pounds, picking up a 16-1 tech fall in his quarterfinal bout. He added a convincing decision, 8-2, in the semifinals to reach the championship match. In the first low-scoring bout of the day for him, Brolsma was unable to get on his offense against Sam Krivus (Virginia) and fell, 3-0, to take second.
A 5-3 loss was a tough start to the day for Balow at 197, and a match with No. 20 Jacob Holschlag (Northern Iowa) in the next round didn’t make it any less difficult. After losing that match by fall, Balow picked up a win by forfeit and finished his day on a high note, pinning Brayden Hill (Air Force) early in the third period of their match to finish 2-2 and take third.
