When Mick Mulvaney, Donald Trump’s acting chief of staff, gave a rare interview earlier this year he offered a glimpse into the plan for getting the president re-elected in 2020.

Argument A offered to the American people, he told The Atlantic magazine, would be on the economy – that to keep growth soaring voters needed another four years of Mr Trump.
But there would be a secondary argument too, Mr Mulvaney added. It would be one based on their opponents. “‘We’re not socialists’ would be our B argument,” he said.
