Pool A
The titleholders of TRENTINO BetClic put up a stellar performance tonight in front of their fans to literally demolish Dinamo MOSCOW in three quick sets with an embarrassing 25-11 in the very last section of the game. Matey Kaziyski and coach Radostin Stoytchev showed no mercy for their former club and extended the winning streak of the Italian club up to 15 matches in a row in the Champions League.
Olympiacos PIRAEUS retained its hopes to qualify for the Playoffs after beating Jihostroj CESKE BUDEJOVICE in three straight sets. The Greek team had a balanced match, combining very powerful attacks with a “solid as a rock” defending game. Coach Anders Kristiansson added: “We desperately wanted today’s victory, otherwise we would have lost our hopes of qualifying for the next round. But, if we want to hold on to our chances of qualifying, we must win in the Czech Republic as well.”
Pool B
Russian Zenit KAZAN scored its third consecutive match in Pool B. The former champions defeated TOURS VB of France 3:1 to extend their positive streak – including the national league – to 12 matches. Russian coach Vladimir Alekno said after the match: “Abrosimov performed extremely well tonight and since he entered the court, things started to work pretty well for us”.
Pool D
PGE Skra BELCHATOW defeated Knack Randstad ROESELARE in front of 12’000 spectators to take the lead in Pool D. PGE Skra started the match with the regular line-up. Mariusz Wlazly, whose recovery after a knee injury turned out to be harder than expected, sat on the bench, while Stéphane Antiga, Michal Bakiewicz and Bartosz Kurek, three receivers, played together. ”In Doha we were forced to play with three receivers, as Mariusz and Jakub Novotny were injured. Now we decided to do it deliberately” stated Jacek Nawrocki, PGE Skra coach. “I really admire my players. We play 5 matches in 8 days, it is a difficult time for us. I try to rotate the line-up to give my players some rest but we can not lose any match. Today I changed the line-up to surprise Knack and it worked” said coach Nawrocki.
CAI TERUEL scored its second home victory, this time against Radnicki KRAGUJEVAC. TERUEL’s coach commented on the importance of that victory as regards the final standings in the Pool.
Pool E
German champion VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN won its third match in a row with the result of 3:1 against JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel S.A. Best scorer of the match was Georg Grozer for the hosts with 23 points. Captain Joao José said he did not see the best match of his team tonight: “We needed a long time to find a way into the match. Then we played point by point and finally won.”
Pool F
Asseco Resovia RZESZOW scored a third victory in this year’s CICL, this time against ISTANBUL B. Sehir Belediyesi in Turkey. The Poles extend their lead in Pool F and approach quickly to notch a berth for the Playoffs.
