Incredible Waterspout Appears In Jersey Shore Video

BRICK, NJ — Sam Carley and her family have been coming to the Jersey Shore for years to soak in the summer vibe and capture memories.

It’s a good bet the video she captured Friday of a waterspout will be one she won’t forget any time soon.

Carley, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, captured the waterspout off the beach in the Normandy Beach section of Brick Township, where she and her family were visiting her mother’s best friend, Reenie McCarthy. McCarthy’s home is on Lyndhurst Drive, just a few streets down from Brick Beach 3.

“My parents were born in New Jersey,” Carley said. “We come here every summer.”

A strong summer thunderstorm that moved through Ocean County on Friday, flooding streets and spawning lightning that struck at least one home in Brick, is the likely cause of what the National Weather Service defines as a tornadic waterspout. They are tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water and have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning, according to the National Weather Service.
