NYFW: AW19 colours “reflect an emergence of confidence”
Pantone has selected 16 colours ranging from a spicy red to an
extroverted pink and a thoughtful blue hue for autumn/winter 2019 that New
York Fashion Week designers will be highlighting in their new collections.
The colours it has selected “reflect an emergence of confidence; bold
and strong, a visceral palette of colours that are relatable yet display
some clever tweaks for the winter season,” said Pantone in a statement.
While the colour combinations suggest a “thirst for liberation and a desire
to realise our own individualised unique identities,” primed for the
Instagrammable age.
For autumn/winter 2019, Pantone states the its 12 stand-out colours
coupled with the four seasonal core natural shades creates a “versatile
palette” not only for fashion designers but also across all areas of
design.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute,
said: “Colours for autumn/winter 2019-2020 range from easy and
sophisticated to strikingly different and unique. This palette of versatile
hues builds a sense of empowerment and confidence, enabling the wearer to
choose the colours that best reflect his or her mood and persona.”
Leading the pack are confidence-building shades – ‘Chili Pepper’, a
spicy red that adds “drama and excitement as it stimulates the senses” and
a deeper adventurous red, ‘Biking Red’ that is “strong and powerful”.
While two pink hues add complexion-flattering to the mix, with embracing
light peach ‘Crème de Pêche’ offering “softness and ease” and ‘Peach Pink’
imparts a “healthy glow” with its warm and flattering hue.

Next up is ‘Rocky Road’, an earthy and grounded solid brown, followed by
the extroverted pink ‘Fruit Dove’ hue that Pantone states “creates a
presence that can’t be ignored,” while ‘Sugar Almond’ adds a sweetened
shade of brown, and ‘Dark Cheddar’ is a bold and daring sharp blend of
yellow and orange to add a pop of colour.
The final four top colours for autumn/winter 2019 are ‘Galaxy Blue’ a
“thoughtful” blue hue, which sits alongside ‘Bluestone’ a blue colour that
offers a “quiet resolve” to any colour palette, while ‘Orange Tiger’
imparts a “fearless energy” and ‘Eden’, a forest green hue adds tradition.
Pantone has also added four classic core shades, which it says are
“strong enough to stand alone or work equally well as a foundation for
distinguishing colour contrasts” – ‘Vanilla Custard’, ‘Evening Blue’,
‘Paloma’ and ‘Guacamole’.
‘Vanilla Custard’ is an understated, smooth and creamy white, while
‘Evening Blue’ is a confident and classic deep blue, ‘Paloma’ is a
“unpretentious elegant” grey, and ‘Guacamole’ establishes a “refreshing
foundation” with its tasteful, nutrient-enriched green.
