2013-14 Minnesota State Wrestling Outlook

Mankato, Minn. — The Minnesota State University wrestling team embarks on the 2013-14 season after a great season to feed off of from last year.

The Mavericks finished the year with two All-Americans who are ranked again this year. The team itself finished second in NSIC with a 10-3-0 record. At regionals they finished third while taking the eighth spot at nationals.

The Mavericks are ranked 11th in the NCAA Division II preseason poll which was released by the Division II Wreslting Coaches Association Oct. 25th. St. Cloud (fourth) and Upper Iowa (seventh) are the only other members of NSIC ranked.

MSU has two individuals who are ranked in their respective weight class. Junior Cody Quinn is ranked second at 165 and Sophomore Alphonso Vruno is ranked fifth at 141.

Quinn, a Covington, Wash., native went 27-8 last year and became a two-time All-American with his third-place finish at the 2012-13 NCAA meet.

Vruno, who hails from Sandwich, Ill., was 37-8 as a freshman and earned All-America honors with a third-place finish at nationals.

Minnesota State is led by head coach Jim Makovsky who enters his 21st season and has a career record of 258-110-5 (23 years). As the Mavericks head coach, he has a compiled a record of 235-91-3 (20 years).

Over the off season, Coach Makovsky announced that Marc Harwood would be joining the MSU coaching staff. Harwood comes by way of assistant coach for Bloomsburg (Pa.) and instructor for Edge MMA and Fitness in Denver, Colo.

The Mavericks start the season at the Luther College Open on Nov. 16th in Decorah, Iowa. NSIC action will begin Dec. 20th when MSU travels to Minot State.
