16 vintage photos of young royals starting school
This September, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s daughter, four-year-old Princess Charlotte, will start full-time education. The first day of school is a nerve-racking time for any family (particularly as the world watches), but the young royal is sure to be looked after by her six-year-old brother, Prince George, as she joins him at the exclusive Thomas’s Battersea, London. There’s no doubt that Princess Charlotte — known for her cheeky waves and boundless energy at public engagements — is eagerly awaiting the big day. Back in June, Kate reportedly said that Charlotte was “looking forward to school” and is “very friendly”.
After missing Prince George’s first day in 2017 (above), due to severe morning sickness while pregnant with Prince Louis, it’s likely that Kate will make an appearance this time around; royal families across the world have long marked this momentous occasion by posing for pictures at the school gates.
Internationally, Crown Princess Mary and Prince Frederik of Denmark posed with twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine in 2017; while King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain were pictured dropping off their daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía in 2008 and 2010 respectively. And in 1971, the ever-glamorous Princess Grace of Monaco was photographed walking with her daughter, Princess Stéphanie, sunglasses on and her dog in tow.
Back in the UK, Prince William and Prince Harry were photographed in their red-trimmed grey uniforms as their mother, Princess Diana, took them to Wetherby Preparatory School, London in 1987 and 1989 respectively. While their father, Prince Charles, was the first heir to the throne not to be homeschooled, starting his education at Hill House School in London and then Cheam School in Berkshire.
