The day of your wedding is the most important day of your life. The culmination of days, months—sometimes even years—of planning the affair, fitting the dress, editing the guest list and tasting the food, the lead up to the wedding celebration can be as overwhelming as it is exciting.
Throw fame into the mix—paparazzi outside your door, thousands of fans following your digital footprint, helicopters circulating the venue—and that excitement can fast turn into anxiety, with the pressure of your special and private celebration being documented in the public eye.
While it’s hard to keep anything hush hush in Hollywood, there are a number of celebrity couples that have successfully wed in secret. Take Heidi Klum and Tom Kaulitz, for example, whose February nuptials were only just revealed, with every detail but the date still under wraps. Or native Australian model Lara Bingle, who married Sam Worthington in Melbourne in December 2014, but only revealed their marriage (and little else!) in October the following year.
Consider as well the problem of photo sharing on the part of guests—these make up the majority evidence we have of Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner’s second wedding ceremony in Wyoming, courtesy of Orlando Bloom and Derek Blasberg—and their celebrity wedding planners, who want to share their work online for all to see.
There’s also the factor of the designers (Maria Grazia Chiuri designed Chiara Ferragni’s Dior gown for example; Karl Lagerfeld dressed Poppy Delevingne in Chanel on her wedding day) that want to share their custom creation with the rest of the world, and entice other couture clients to get married in their wares.
Unlike the fanfare and frenzy of a Kardashian wedding, where the reality stars document every minutiae across their digital platforms and television series, these celebrity couples have mastered the art of keeping mum about their intimate affairs (even requesting their star-studded guest lists to avoid using their phones).
Curiosities piqued? Surprise, Vogue has curated a list of 11 celebrity couples that have tied the knot without spilling the details of their special day.
